News Friday, August 10, 2007 Telluride Hospital District thinking big for the future

Published: Wednesday, February 14, 2007 8:37 PM CST

2007 Strategic Plan outlines host of improvements, expansions   By Katie Klingsporn

The Telluride Medical Center is a small facility that often runs at full capacity and has little opportunity for

expanded or specialized services. But the Telluride Hospital District has big ambitions for the medical

center — as well as the overall state of Telluride’s health care services. These include finding and constructing

a new medical center facility, improving and adding services, forging a relationship with a major regional

hospital and launching a center for high altitude medicine research. These lofty goals comprise the highlights

of the district’s recently-updated strategic plan, which Telluride Hospital District President Bill Grun

presented to representatives of all three local governments on Monday.

“Basically, what I want to tell you is that the medical center is moving forward on a number

of initiatives to improve healthcare in the Telluride region,” Grun said. The most prominent issue facing

the district is expansion of the facility, Grun said. The current facility is housed in a diminutive building

on Pacific Avenue in a mostly-residential neighborhood. The land is owned by Idarado, and the district

leases the building for the bargain price of $10 a year.

After exploring the options of remodeling the current facility, building a new facility at its current site and

building a new facility on a new site, the latter emerged as the most feasible option, Grun said. The

challenges of trying to expand on what is already a small piece of land or in an already small building

made those options impractical, he said.

“The most pragmatic option is clearly building a new facility on a new site,” he said.

Now the issue is pinpointing that site, a task the hospital district will embark on as early as this

spring, Grun said. “We’re starting now to pursue the idea of a new facility on a new site,” he said.

And as far as funding the undertaking, he said, the district expects to rely heavily on the philanthropic

character of town. With a new facility comes the opportunity to add new specialty services such as

pediatrics, neurology, mental health and 4-6 beds for observation or even in-patient care, Grun said.

However, demographic, economic and seasonal characteristics of Telluride create unique conditions

for health care. Telluride’s population is saturated with super-active athletes and visitors and few senior

citizens, it fluctuates with the seasons, and many prefer to leave for major medical care or surgeries.

Because of these and others, some services may simply not be utilized if they are added.

In order to determine which are appropriate for the new facility, the hospital district plans on evaluating

the demand, medical benefit, financial impact and other factors of each to determine which make sense.

And in order to fortify its services and tap into some outside benefits, the hospital district hopes to forge

a relationship with a major regional hospital. The district has its eye on both St. Mary’s Hospital in

Grand Junction and Mercy Hospital in Durango.

A relationship like this could provide access to expanded clinical resources, more specialists and

operating benefits, Grun said. Rounding out the hospital district’s ambitions is the launching of a

center for high altitude medicine research. This new venture will be directed by local doctor Peter

Hackett and operated by the Telluride Medical Center in collaboration with the University of Colorado.

This facility will put Telluride on the map in the medical community and offer the community an

exciting new initiative, Grun said.
